'a few of my favourite things'
july 2021

'a few of my favourite things' is a collection of 10 photographs that explores identity through personal belongings that I created for my VCE Media final.

I was inspired by Laura Heron, a Top Arts student in 2020, and her work which was influenced by Dutch Still Life and The Vices, specifically gambling, tobacco and alcohol.

Her piece involved objects such as cigarettes and liquor bottles as well as litter found on the street which she photographed then wrote over in paint pen in a graffiti style.

She invited her audience to thinking about how these vices, which are so easily accessible and legal, tear so many families and communities apart while graffiti, which isn't physically harming anyone, is illegal.

Her concept really intrigued me and I was really interested in the photography style she chose so I began researching the Dutch Still Life movement of the 17th century. I was facisnated by how strong a narrative Heron was able to create from simple found objects and it sparked me to explore this concept in a different way. Thus, A Few Of My Favourite Things was created and explored the identity of each of my family members through the use of only personal belongings.
